It’s a crowning achievement to have a major work placed in your hometown. A former teacher of Doug’s told him about the project, that there was an open call for artists to apply. There were originally about 60 applicants, then it was narrowed down to 10, and finally Doug was chosen.

Doug selected the eagle motif for this community, where there is a salmon hatchery, the splendor of Lake Sammamish and daily fish vs. eagle battles. At 1-1/2 times lifesize, “The Valiant Effort” shows both animals trying to continue life – but the ultimate outcome is left to the viewer’s speculation. As with many of Doug’s works, this one doesn’t tell how it will end, a theme he thought particularly appropriate for the people who pass this way, in the midst of a struggle whose end is uncertain.
